Florida Oranges

In 1945,  Florida became the number one producer of oranges. Florida became the number one because of three reasons. First, Florida grew more Valencia oranges which became more preferred by industries in comparison to California which grew navel oranges. Second, Florida also focused on frozen concentrate technology which helped it become more popular. Third,  Florida expanded its citrus industy in less populated areas. In California, the growth population expanded and housing replaced the orange trees. So, Florida was able to produce more oranges than California.

"The Florida citrus crop produces about 68 percent of the nation's oranges and 73 percent of its  grapefruit, about twice California's, the next-largest producer" (Mayda 249).
